University of Arts, Faculty of Applied Arts (FAA)
Erasmus+ Mobility for Training at:
École nationale supérieure des Arts Décoratifs (EnsAD), Paris, France
During my mobility I visited the ENSADlibrary, but also other libraries in Paris, specialized in art and design – École NationaleSupérieure des Beaux-Arts library, Musée des Arts Décoratifs(MAD) library and L’Institut national d’histoire de l’art (INHA) library. Each library had a number of examples of good practice, which could be adapted and implemented at the Library of the Faculty of Applied Arts, such as the type of the publication classification schemes and visual design for that, the practice of using publication protection covers, guidelines for collection management, structuring the Digital library, organizing different aspects of the Library of materials. Specific possibilities for cooperation in the future were also mapped, such as the cooperation in the field of cataloging, preserving and presenting the collection of artist books.
The most elaborated visit was to the host institution, where I discussed the particular services/functions with each employee responsible for the different aspects of the library services.
Firstly, we discussed the Digital library (photothèque). More precisely, we talked about structuring, software, technical aspects of managing the visual material and providing data for it, communication with students and teaching staff for providing the material. Another important topic was the institutions Mediathèque with its organizing the online platform, connecting with other databases such as BEAR, BSAD, and platforms such as Tënk, Les Yeux Doc,FLIM. We also discussed periodicals and online resources, and went over collection management of the print periodical, which constitutes major research strength of the library and knowledge of the up-to-date information on arts, design, culture and related subjects, electronic versions of periodicals which complement the print collections and provide service to researchers, through full-text journal databases. We also discussed the collection management – guidelines for acquisition of publications, book withdrawal policy, special collections preservation and categorization, the practice of the publication covering as a way of protecting and extending the life of library publications. Finally, I learned more about their Library of Materials, and more precisly, about the conceptualization and organisation, classification of the materials, providing metadata and creating a unique, specialized cataloguing system, mediation between manufacturers and students/artists and designers.
During my mobility, I had an opportunity to visit all the departments of the school and also to visit the exhibition 100% L’EXPO, organized in the collaboration between La Villette and art schools to present the works of recent graduates of the ENSAD, École des Beaux-ArtsParis, École nationalesupérieure de la photographiein Arles, and other art schools. It was a great insight into the contemporary practice of young artists and designers and into the support of their work through high-level production and presentation.
This mobility was a great opportunity for me to get to know and understand some high-quality services in the Parisian libraries, to gain some practical skills relevant for my current job and further professional development, to build up new contact and expand professional network with librarians who share similar values and approaches, problems and challenges in their everyday job.
It was a great satisfaction to be in such a learning environment, to share experiences with my colleagues, to share ideas and enthusiasm about future cooperation and long-term aspirations regarding the mission and development of the library services. The mobility was a major contribution to my professional growth and to overall satisfaction with my job, and it was a great motivation for me to bring some new ideas and proposals which would enrich and improve library services at the Faculty of Applied Arts.
